SPEED SIGNS NEEDED AT MOUNT MARTHA SCHOOL

01 April 2009

Mornington MP David Morris has called on the Brumby Government to immediately install a 60kph School Speed Limit and electronic signage on Nepean Highway, Mt Martha, opposite Balcombe Grammar School.

Speaking in State Parliament this week Mr Morris said the success of the school and the rapid rise in pupil numbers meant that the potential for accidents outside the Nepean Highway property could no longer be ignored.

“. ..we have a growing school population, some of whom need to cross the highway to catch buses on the southbound side. Kids, and cars travelling at 100 kilometres an hour, are not a good combination under any circumstances, and a genuine risk exists at this location…

..growth in student numbers has triggered a condition on the development permit that requires the installation of traffic lights, to which the school is contributing substantially.

That trigger has been met, and the lights are now being planned. As an interim measure VicRoads has agreed to put in an 80 kilometres per hour speed limit, and the shire has agreed to assist with the construction of bus stops, and link paths...

Once the work is completed it will be a big improvement, but that is going to take some time, and while the speed reductions to 80 can occur quickly, the rest is going to take a while. In the interim the risk remains, albeit tempered by the reduction in the speed limit....80 is still way too fast.”
