David Morris MP, Member for Mornington believes that Mt Eliza is again under threat and in danger of losing more land zoned as Green Wedge.
A town planning application has been lodged with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council for the development of a camping and caravan park on the corner of Tower Road and Nepean Highway, Mt Eliza.
It is a site of considerable sensitivity as the corner forms one of the principal gateways to the town and is surrounded largely by residences and the Green Wedge Zone.
The town planning application is proceeding through the normal process, and as the proposal is strongly contested by many local residents.
Speaking in Parliament this week Mr Morris said “Yet again I raise …the gross inadequacy and total ineffectiveness of the government’s green wedge planning controls.”
“…in 2002 the government introduced Melbourne 2030, appropriating the green wedge name but expanding the area tenfold without proper consideration and in the process severely weakening controls
on already protected areas.”
“The Mount Eliza–Mornington green break subsequently suffered a number of assaults on its integrity.”
“Applications were approved that could not have been considered even under the earlier controls.”
“(This) is an application for residential development in an area in which it is not permitted. It can only be considered because of the flawed controls introduced by this government. “
“The minister must call in and reject this totally inappropriate application.”
