08 June 2011

Mornington MP David Morris today announced that the Mornington Railway Preservation Society, Mornington Peninsula Shire with Friends of Mornington Foreshore and the Mornington Peninsula Shire will receive a total of $14,500 as part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s Bush Guardians Grants Program to protect native plants and animals in the Mornington Electorate.

The Mornington Railway Preservation Society Inc (Friends of the Snow Gum) received the grant to decrease the population of weeds – Watsonia & reduction of the threat to the population of Diuris punctata var. punctata.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire with Friends of Mornington Foreshore received the grant for the Mornington-Mt Martha Foreshore Reserve to continue on from previous works done in reducing polygala & grass weed threats to a suite of orchids.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire received the grant for the Mount Martha Park Reserve for the removal of weeds smothering the mid storey and shading the ground & using up soil moisture.

As one component of the Victorian Government’s $30 million Weeds and Pests Initiative, the Bush Guardians Program is a community based small grants program that aims to protect threatened flora and fauna from the impact of weeds and pests. The program encourages volunteer groups to develop, manage and undertake on-ground works on public land.

The Bush Guardians Program enables community volunteers to assist in the day-to-day management, care and protection of our natural assets in public reserves.

Mr Morris said “We need to recognise the tremendous and dedicated work of local community groups, and the great contribution they make to the local environment. Thank you to all the volunteers for your local knowledge, expertise and hard work in caring for our public places.”

“The Mornington Peninsula is such a unique area. It is vital to protect this environment and these grants will help to maintain the beauty we are lucky to live with day to day.”
