David Morris MP would like to congratulate the women in the Mornington electorate who have participated in the regular free mammogram screenings to detect breast cancer.
The biggest risk factor for breast cancer is being a woman over 50 years of age. This is the reason why BreastScreen Victoria invites women aged 50-69, who do not have breast symptoms or changes, to have a FREE screening mammogram every two years. Regular screening mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, before any symptoms are noticed, and when treatment is likely to be most successful.
BreastScreen Victoria’s research demonstrates that support of key community leaders influences the decision of a woman to attend the screening program. Recently in an historic demonstration of the benefits of political bi-partisanship in delivering health strategies, Victorian State MPs joined together for the release of the inaugural electorate report card at Parliament House.
The report card outlines the participation by women by each electorate because a high participation rate among women aged 50-69 years is necessary to achieve substantial reductions in mortality from breast cancer across the Victorian community.
The state-wide participation rate is currently 53.8%. BreastScreen Victoria is aiming to reach 60% by 2015.
Mr Morris was pleased to see that local women had a participation rate of 57% which is an excellent result.
BreastScreen CEO, Ms Vicki Pridmore said that BreastScreen is committed to working with all State Members of Parliament to improve participation rates for the benefit of the community.
