Mt Martha Pedestrian Lights Turned On!

Mt Martha Pedestrian Lights Turned On!

Mornington MP David Morris was delighted to turn on the lights today at the new pedestrian crossing at the corner of Esplanade and Watsons Road, Mount Martha.

“Pedestrian safety has long been an issue at the location, and the subject of a community campaign. There was an obvious need to link the beach to the main shopping strip and this was especially supported by the Mount Martha Yacht Club and the Mount Martha Life Saving Club” Mr Morris said

“Despite strong local support, the Brumby government refused to fund any safety works at the location”.

Mr Morris went to the 2010 election campaign with the intention to fund a crossing.

The $232,000 project included the installation of pedestrian operated signals on the Esplanade, fencing and associated works.

“The project will benefit those who cross the Esplanade to access the beach, Mount Martha Lifesaving Club and Mount Martha Yacht Club, an area which gets busy during summer, including the hundreds of children who participate in the nippers program at the life saving club” Mr Morris said.

Mr Morris thanked all of those concerned with the project, including the representatives who met with him from several community groups, the local media and VicRoads.

“I had overwhelming community support for this project, and I am confident the lights will add significantly to road safety in Mount Martha Village”.
