This weekend’s 2012 Australian Moth Nationals On Port Phillip Bay today received a $10,000 funding boost from the Victorian Government’s Significant Sporting Events Program Mornington MP David Morris announced today.
Mr Morris said the Mornington Yacht Club would receive the grant to support the event and boost the profile of the sport.
“The Nationals are a fantastic event that brings together the best of the best in this sailing class, including three out of the top four sailors from last year’s Moth World Titles, Joe Turner, Scott Babbage and New Zealand 49er star Peter Burling,”
“Events like these also promote our bay as a top waterway for national and international competitions, attract tourism, enhance Victoria’s reputation as the ideal place to stage major sail events and boost local participation in the sport.”
“The waters of Port Phillip Bay offer a great variety of conditions for elite sailing, which we saw at the recent ISAF Sailing World Cup. It’s the only World Cup sailing event held in the Southern Hemisphere,” Mr. Morris said.
The race features Moths from across Australia and around the world including Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands.
The event will also be the last competition for many athletes preparing for sailing events at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Mr Morris congratulated Mornington Yacht Club’s effort in preparation for this great up-and-coming local event.
“We’ll be seeing some great sailing in Port Phillip Bay over the next week and I encourage everyone to come down and enjoy this fantastic event,”
