Mornington MP David Morris has called on the Andrews Government to boost resources for Peninsula police after the latest crime statistics showed big increases in drug use and possession, weapons and explosives charges, and local burglaries.

“The latest crime statistics reveal that offences within the Mornington Peninsula Shire area have risen by 5.45%. The statistics reveal a much more troubling picture in Mount Eliza, where offences were up by 11%, Mornington, up 20% and Mount Martha 9%.” Mr Morris said.

“The statistics show that across the state, drug use and possession is up 16.5%, but on the Peninsula we saw an increase of 42.5%. Total offences went from 360 in 2014 to 513 in 2015. More concerning is the fact that of the 153 additional offences, roughly 40%, or 62 offences, were committed in Mornington.”

“Weapons and explosives offences across the state rose 17.1%, but on the Peninsula Shire they soared by 39.29%. Total offences rose from 252 in 2014 to 351 in 2015. Of the 99 new weapons offences, 34 were committed in Mornington and Mount Martha.”

“Burglaries and theft in the Mornington electorate jumped 18% from 1001 to 1186. Particularly hard hit were Mount Eliza, up 47% and Mount Martha, up 28% in Mount Martha.”

“The outcomes from the Andrews Government’s failure to invest in additional police is depressingly clear. Unless the Government is prepared to abandon its freeze on police numbers and provide the necessary resources to keep our community safe we can only expect local crime to worsen in the next twelve months.”
