Mornington MP, David Morris, has called on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, to act on two issues within the Mornington Electorate. He has called on Minister Donnellan to establish a school zone outside Balcombe Grammar, as well as the establishment of a proper pedestrian crossing on Main Street Mornington.

“The Mornington Electorate has four schools that directly abut Nepean Highway – Mount Eliza Primary School and The Peninsula School in Mount Eliza, Mornington Secondary College in Mornington, and Balcombe Grammar in Mount Martha.

Both the Mount Eliza and Mornington locations enjoy 60kmh school zones, with electronic flashing lights. Balcombe Grammar has no school speed zone, and traffic speeds through unhindered at 80kmh.” Mr Morris said.

“Balcombe Grammar has no school speed zone, and traffic thunders through unhindered at 80 kilometres per hour. It is not a satisfactory situation.”

Mr. Morris is urging the Minister to review this section and establish a school zone as it should be.

“A second location where growth in traffic problems has caused concerns for pedestrian safety is Main Street in Mornington, between Nepean Highway and Cromwell Street.”

“My office is located in this stretch of Main Street, and I can assure the house that you sometimes take your life into your hands trying to cross this street. This 800m of road is entirely without any pedestrian crossing, yet it carries high levels of foot traffic, including many older pedestrians.” Mr. Morris said.

With both Centrelink and the Mornington Information Centre within this stretch of Main Street, a proper pedestrian crossing is needed to deal with the increased traffic from our electorate’s growth. The Minister needs to act on both of these issues to avoid a tragedy.
