Mornington MP David Morris has called for immediate attention to road conditions adjacent to the new St Macartans Primary School in Bungower Road.
Urgent works, including signage, 40km school speed limits and the installation of a school pedestrian crossing are desperately needed.
Mr Morris said “Bungower Road serves as a major connector road, carrying high volumes of traffic at both morning and afternoon school hours. There are presently no warning signs or other safety devices”.
“Both students and drivers are at great risk.”
“Parents of students attending both St Macartans and Mornington Secondary College must know that their child is able to journey to and from school in safety and not have to thread their way though high speed traffic.”
“Development in the Bungower Road area has been rapid in recent years and further works are planned for the months ahead.”
“The planned retirement village and residential development will have a further impact, with increased congestion leading to higher levels of driver frustration”
“The opening date for the new St Macartans has been known for some time, and the necessary traffic works should have been completed long before the first students arrived.”
“Only immediate attention to this dangerous situation will avert tragedy.”
