A petition calling for the rejection of a planned 18.3 metre mobile phone tower in Canadian Bay Road, Mount Eliza, bearing 255 signatures, was tabled in the Legislative Assembly on 29 May 2008:
"To the Legislative Assembly of Victoria:
I present the petition of the Community Against Mobile Phone Towers at Schools (CAMTAS) and concerned parties, as residents of the state electorate of Mornington, Victoria, to draw attention of the house to application no. P08/0227 for the approval of a mobile phone tower on the premises of St Thomas More Primary School, Canadian Bay Road, MountEliza.
The petitioners therefore request the Legislative Assembly of Victoria reject the application on the grounds of the following points:
- High negative impact on the visual amenities of the neighbourhood (18.3 metre tower).
- The tower is inconsistent with the character of the area.
- The tower will cause immense and unjustifiable distress to the parents living around the school.
- The proposed tower is an unacceptable risk to the residents, children and parishioners. Studies are inconclusive and the CSIRO will not commit to the long term safety of this technology.
- The tower will cause devaluation of properties in the surrounding vicinity."
