Mount Martha North – Minister Must Act

01 September 2010

Mr MORRIS — On another matter of environmental concern, the government was last year dragged kicking and screaming to undertake coastal protection works at Mount Martha North beach.

The government committed to, and erected signs advertising its intent to relocate 15 000 cubic metres of sand from Mount Martha South beach and to undertake cliff stabilisation works, including a sandbag wall and safety fence.
What has been done?
Less than two‑thirds of the sand has been moved and none of the cliff protection works have been undertaken.
What is the outcome? Zero.
The sand has gone and the water is again up against the cliff. It is clear the government’s plan has completely failed and we are back where we started five years ago. There is a very real danger of further cliff collapse.
The Minister for Environment and Climate Change must act now to ensure that effective protection works are undertaken before the coming beach season.
