Mount Eliza CFA – 75th Anniversary

18 August 2011

Mr MORRIS (Mornington) — I recently had the privilege of attending a function to mark the 75th anniversary of the Mount Eliza fire brigade.

The evening was the culmination of several months of celebrations, including an open day in May which showcased the work of the brigade over three‑quarters of a century.
The crowd, which included current and former brigade members and community leaders, recognised the contribution of so many citizens of Mount Eliza in protecting the lives and property of not only their neighbours but also many communities across the state.
Those in attendance were treated to an excellent speech from former captain, now life member and first lieutenant, Geoffrey Birch who traced the history of the brigade and its evolution from early humble beginnings in 1936 as a small rural operation to the modern, highly trained and well‑equipped volunteer brigade we have today — although I hasten to add, for the benefit of the Deputy Premier and Minister for Police and Emergency Services, that opportunities to improve equipment levels remain.

Guests were presented with badges that were specially struck to mark the anniversary, and I am proud to wear mine in the house as I speak today.

My congratulations to Captain Richard Hume, to all brigade members and former members for their tremendous contribution to the community over 75 years and for their continuing work to keep the community safe today.
