Mr MORRIS (Mornington) — Keep Australia Beautiful recently announced the finalists for the 2011 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities awards.
I am delighted to advise the house that four organisations and events in the Mornington electorate have accounted for 11 of a total of 94 places across the state.
The Mornington township is one of six finalists for the tidy town of the year award, reflecting the high priority placed by both the council and the community on sustainability, waste minimisation and protection of the coast.
The shire’s long‑running Schools Environment Week, which I have spoken about on other occasions, is a finalist in both the community action and community government partnerships category for its work connecting children with the environment.
The Mornington Community Garden is also a finalist in two categories — community action and water conservation. The group focuses on organic food and provides education and support on sustainability and climate change adaptation, water conservation and water‑wise gardening.
An incredible six finalist positions have been won by St Macartan’s Primary School in the categories of environmental sustainability, towards zero waste, water conservation, energy efficiency, young leaders and community leaders.
Congratulations to all the finalists on their practical and effective contribution to protecting the peninsula for generations to come, and my best wishes for success to all at the awards ceremony.
