Mr MORRIS (Mornington) — I rise to mark the passing on 24 October of a former member of this place, Robert Max Gillett.
Max was born in Geelong on 23 July 1927. He spent his early life running his own retail produce business and had an involvement with the Anakie branch of the Australian Primary Producers Union.
He was elected to this house in 1958 and served as the member for Geelong West until 1964.
Following life in Parliament, Max took an active interest in a number of agricultural pursuits. He farmed at Jalna South, near Geelong, and had an early involvement in the live sheep export trade.
He was a president and councillor of the Royal Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society and played an important part in the development of the Geelong Showgrounds, gaining a permanent home for the society and the Royal Geelong Show.
My association with Max started when I was 19 years old and was part of a group that met to build a ski club at Mount Hotham. Max immediately came to the fore, and along with a number of others, he proved to be a driving force. With his energy, enthusiasm and hard work he was instrumental in the lodge being completed in one summer season.
I must say that he was indeed one of nature’s gentlemen.
