Sporting and community groups across Victoria will be able to cash-in on the introduction of a Michael O’Brien-led Liberal Nationals government Cash for Containers scheme.
The Cash for Containers scheme would give cash for cans, glass and plastic bottles returned to a collection centre – helping to reduce litter, reduce landfill and increase recycling.
The scheme complements the Liberal Nationals’ visionary Zero to Landfill policy to end landfill by 2035 and create a new low emission, reliable energy source.
The Cash for Containers scheme will be designed in consultation with industry, including manufacturers, retailers, and hospitality providers, to maximise community benefits.
In other states with a similar scheme, sporting and community groups have been the big winners using the money to invest in new equipment and infrastructure.
Victoria continues to suffer a waste, recycling and landfill crisis following years of inaction by the Andrews Labor Government and its incompetent Environment Minister.
While Labor dithers, the Liberal Nationals are committing to solutions for Victoria’s future.
Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Michael O’Brien:
“By delivering a Cash for Containers scheme in Victoria, we will reduce litter, improve recycling and support sporting and community groups across the state.
“Our Cash for Containers scheme will mean less waste going to landfill, better recycling and a new source of revenue for sporting and community groups.
“Victorians have been calling for a Cash for Containers scheme for years. I’ve listened and an O’Brien- led Liberal Nationals Government will deliver.”
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change, David Morris:
“The Labor Government has failed to act on Victoria’s waste and recycling crisis, instead watching hundreds of thousands of tonnes of recycling sent to landfill.
“The Liberal Nationals’ Cash for Containers scheme is about doing the right thing, solving today’s problems and standing up for future generations.”
